Working From Home - Pros & Cons

Sorry that I have to explicitly mention that I’m not going to write about Multi Level Marketing when summarizing the domain of “Working From Home”.  It’s just because the MLM people took over the association of the two terms. But “Working From Home” can be associated with many other occupations and businesses.

This method of working began flourishing when the Internet became the present and future marketplace. You can work from home using telephone and fax machine but it would be slow and worthless comparing to the speed and quality of  the Internet and its E-Mailing systems.

I’ll analyze the mode of working from home using the example of printing sites and graphic artists  relations. Printing sites and print shops receive orders for manufacturing printed materials which need designing. Beginning with Business Cards, Flyers and envelopes up to Folders, Catalogs and Books. Printing sites and print shops who doesn’t have an integral studio (and in many cases even if they have) turn to freelancing working from home graphic artists for designing the required product.

The process goes like that:

A customer arrives to the print shop, physically or virtually, and ask, for example, Flyers to advertise his business or occupation.

The reception clerk prepares a price quotation and and if the customer authorize it - his request becomes an order which is going to be processed.

The print shop mails the order to one of its working-from-home graphic artists.

The graphic artist starts a dialog with the customer, through the phone or E-mails, exchanging point of views about the product in question until “white smoke” is achieved.

The graphic artist mails the final product to be printed and customer serviced by the print shop.

What are the advantages of working from home from the graphic artist point of view?

  1. He controls his time and manage his life at his convenient according to his priorities.
  2. He doesn’t have to drive forth and back always on “rush hours”.
  3. He is operating in his own natural and safe habitat. (My home is my castle)
  4. He is working quietly without surrounding hullabaloo
  5. He is concentrating on one single job without the disturbances and interrupts of demanding bosses, bothersome clients and envy colleagues.

What are the advantages of working from home from the print shop point of view?

  1. No discipline problems with coming late or leaving early employee.
  2. If there is an organized  transportation - less one head to be transported.
  3. If there is an organized nourishing - less one mouth to be fed.
  4. The print shop is less crowded: sparing a table, computer and telephone.
  5. Regulating the burden among the graphic artists: sporadic and urgent sudden popping jobs would be given to the print shop studio artists and big planned jobs would be given to the working from home artists.

What are the disadvantages of working from home from the graphic artist point of view?

  1. Sometimes its better to separate home from work and vis versa.
  2. Sometimes home is nuisance: children or spouse making noise and bother.
  3. When the customer is pushing and pressing W.F.H becomes a problem.
  4. Working together with other artists can improve one’s professionalism like an enriching environment.
  5. Sometimes its hard to maintain working high standards at home. Temptations are available.
  6. You got to have self discipline if you want to work from home.
  7. You miss all the fun of gossip and “yakidiaking” with working friends and colleagues

What are the disadvantages of working from home from the print shop point of view?

  1. Less control over working stuff and less flexibility in regulating orders burden in real time.
  2. There is nothing like customer and artist working side by side in real time.
  3. Difficulties assessing waging and rewarding a working from home employee.
  4. An artist, working from home, can receive orders from competing print shops for more money and prefer their orders over the print shop he (or she) is working regularly.

Piratical experience proves that there are three kinds of people prefer working from home:

  1. Pregnant women, nursing women, mothers to small children, find this arrangement much more convenient then going out to work and by the way saving a lot of money paying nannies or nursery schools.
  2. Elderlies and pensioners who need vacant and near by easy to be reached toilets, or depended on medicines to be taken in need, or can’t bear noise and tumult, or allergic to air pollution, can find working from home a very comfortable possibility.
  3. Disables and invalids - in many cases this is the only way for them to work and support themselves and their families.

The common headache for all working from home artists are the debates with the print shop managers about evaluating their efforts and measuring the time they dedicated for this or that order. Such a debate means money. The print shop managers will always evaluate the time needed for completing an order as shorter as they think it should be. The artists will defend their interests by  arguing for more time telling their provider how much work was done, how much difficulties they had to overcome and how much the customer was annoying. In “bottom line” -  the money payers will always have the feeling that the working from home artist is playing “seek and hide” with them spending his time shopping, sleeping, drinking coffee with friends or having fun in the gym hall on their account.

You, as a customer, can ask for being served by one of the print shop studio artists or by a freelancer, suiting your demands and convenience.
